"Bergman Island" celebrated in New York

The Swedish documentary "Bergman Island" was applauded by the critics on its US premiere. From December 6-19, the art-house theater Film Forum on Manhattan screened the film.

"An extraordinarily revealing documentary", writes Stephen Holden in The New York Times. "Marie Nyrerod, the interviewer, who directed the movie, doesn't shy away from asking painful questions relating to Mr. Bergman's parenting, and he responds with a bluntness that is as disturbing as it is candid."

"Easily the world's most influential living filmmaker and one of the greatest in cinema history, Bergman reveals himself here in a manner previously available only through his movies.", writes Newsday's critic.

In Bergman Island Swedish Television journalist Marie Nyreröd visits the director at home on the island of Fårö, elicits his final thinking on Persona and Cries and Whispers, and the role played in his life and art by fear, love, death, music, humiliation and, in his own words, "the intensely erotic nature of film and theater."
