Sagoteatern/Medborgarteatern"This children's theatre is an experimental theatre." - Ingmar Bergman in the preface to The Tinder Box. |

Medborgarhuset was built between 1936-39 in the southern parts of Stockholm. The fact that Bergman was recruited to start up Sagoteatern (the Fairy Tale Theatre) was a mere coinsidence. Bergman's intention was to make young authors write children's plays, when the existing plays weren't good enough for the "special working methods of Sagoteatern". The authors he contacted were interested, but the result was thin. The first performance was instead an adaptation of HC Andersen's The Tinder Box.
About two weeks after the opening of Sagoteatern Bergman started Medborgarteatern in the same house. Holding as few as 100 seats this was the smallest theatre in Stockholm at the time.
