Maj-Britt Nilsson

1924-2006

Actress at the Royal Dramatic Theatre who was also a popular film star in Sweden in the 40s and 50s. She played leading roles in three of Ingmar Bergman's early films, since when she has been mostly active in the theatre.

Maj-Britt Nilsson was born in Stockholm on 11 December 1924, the daughter of Edmund and Augusta Nilsson.

In 1944 she was began her studies at the Royal Dramatic Theatre drama school  and she attracted considerable attention even as a student. Her breakthrough came in 1948 when she appeared in Jean Genet's The Maids.

She passed away in Cannes December 19 2006.

 

The film debut had been three years earlier in Alf Sjöberg's Resan bort (1945). Nilsson was a popular film star of the 1950s, starring in three films by Ingmar Bergman, and in Hasse Ekman's Jazz Boy (1958).

In 1951 she married the theatre director Per Gerhard. She left the Royal Dramatic Theatre company the same year and played a number of major roles at her husband's Vasa theatre up until 1985.
