The first production of Scenes from a Marriage directed by Rita Russek. Johan and Marianne were played by renowned actors Alan Howard and Penny Downie.
The first stage version of Scenes from a Marriage in Bergman's own direction was part of a three part project where it opened together with Nora (A Doll's House) and Miss Julie on the same night on the three scenes of the Munich Residenztheater. Rita Russek played the part of Nora and Scenes from a Marriage was performed with all the characters appearing in the television script.
When Bergman returned to Sweden in 1986 he was visited by Russek who had also left the Residenztheater. Together they adapted Scenes from a Marriage into a two person version. Russek was to play the part of Marianne over 100 times, touring during a period of three years. Following requests to stage the performance from all over the world Bergman permitted Russek to direct the play herself. The production at Wyndham's Theatre became her first, starring Alan Howard and Penny Downie in the parts of Johan and Marianne.
